Letter contd. from p.66 [sic] Recd. from Franz Rahtkens
The extremely low rates of freight still prevalent, & the continued heavy back calls of the
Mutual Insurance Clubs are, of course, mainly to blame, & whilst these may be more easily
borne by larger more modern boats it seems, with the low freights now ruling & the S. S. John
Redhead's general impracticability & heavy consumption, so impossible to do any further good
that we would suggest to our co-owners to sell the boat as speedily as possible. We are the
more persuaded to make this proposal as No. 3 Survey, always heavy & costly, is now due, &
as there are no funds in hand to betray it. Will you be kind enough to favour us with your
views as early as possible.
[p 76} Copy of letter recd. July 22nd 1895 from Messrs. Franz Rahtkens & Co. - we have not
yet been favoured with your reply to our circular of the 6th. inst. & would now beg to submit
the proposal already assented to by a large majority, of selling the boat to a Norwegian
Company of limited liability to which we shall be glad to receive your consent. Scrip would be
issued for your share, & of course afford complete security. - Several of our neighbours have
already done so with considerable advantage. (signed F. Rahtkens)
Mr. Schoof has ansd. same & consented to it being sold.

To Rechts-Anwalt Letzner, Chemnitz
Dear Sir,
In answer to your letter June 19th enclosed a true statement of Mr. O. G. Muller's indebtedness
to the Exec. of the late Charles Russ £4532.8.5 as per bills handed over to you & there can be
no question of its truthfulness and admittance by the Court, we hope. We notice your receipt
mentions only 16 bills whereas you recd. 17, one more of £100 - per 31 of August which
surely you will find with the others.
So the gross amount of the bills is £4602.8.5 of which Mr. Muller paid £70 Rests due £4532.8.5
Respecting the question of interests it is the law in Gt. Britain that in case of accepted bills
there is no rebate for interests we presume that this is the same in Germany however this
question you will know best to decide.
Enclosed please find power of attorney with strict instruction not to accept less than 33 1/3%
in cash or very short payments. Carl Hermann Muller is of course liable for the amount & you
will have to proceed against him unless at the meeting July 5 you settle with 33 1/3% cash as
said above. Awaiting your news promptly we are yours truly
