Ernest Russell wrote to many military commanders in 1944, reporting his experience of Italian military personnel at the end of WW I; in particular he commented that men would bore holes in the walls and ceilings to spy on what was going on in adjacent rooms - either to see where money and valuable were being hidden or for sexual gratification.
